DESCRIBE A MAIN (INTERESTING, IMPORTANT, ADMIRABLE) CHARACTER IN A STUDIED FILM (VISUAL TEXT)
EXPLAIN, DISCUSSING VISUAL AND/OR VERBAL TECHNIQUES HOW THE VIEWER UNDERSTANDS WHY THE CHARACTER IS INTERESTING/IMPORTANT/ADMIRABLE
An important character in James Cameron's film, Avatar (director's extended cut/version) is the film's protagonist, Jake Sully. Sully is a wheelchair bound war veteran who is drafted into an advanced scientific avatar programme on a moon distant to Earth, nike danmark, known as Pandora, which humans are colonising and mining. Sully is an interesting and admirable character because of the humanity he shows towards the local inhabitants of Pandora, even at the expense of his own place within human society. Both his physical and psychological change is shown through visual and verbal techniques such as voice over, narrative perspective and camerawork.
The viewer is first introduced to Jake Sully through a voice over narration explaining some of his inner most thoughts. "I started having these dreams of flying." Through this narrative technique we begin to understand the character and admire his desire for freedom. The voice over goes on to say "but sooner or later you always have to wake up" and we quickly learn that Sully is anything but free. The camera reveals from a low angle, with a tilt, that Sully is wheel chair bound and the voice over continues, stating "the strong prey on the weak, that's the way it's always been and no one does a damn thing about it." The viewer, at first, feels pity for Jake's situation and cynicism and then admiration when, despite his physical disadvantage, he protects a beaten woman in a bar scene. This scene is significant because it reveals Sully's inclination to protect the vulnerable and it shows that he is humane.
It is this same sense of moral justice and empathy that enables Sully to become a saviour to the Na'vi race of humanoids on Pandora. When he takes over his cloned avatar body, regains the freedom of being able to walk and run and learns about the Na'vi, Jake's purpose in life becomes apparent. His impressive ability to adapt and learn quickly is displayed in the forest scene early in the film, where he first experiences the Pandora wildlife. In this fully computer generated and animated, yet thoroughly realistic, sequence the viewer observes Jake adapt quickly to a new, foreign and terrifying environment that forces him to use survival skills and quick wits. Fast tracking shots and panning camera movements follow Jake through the forest at speed and the effect created is visually overwhelming, some indication of how it might 'feel' to be there. A hand held camera effect follows Jake running through the forest being chased by a frightening Thanator; a vicious creature several times larger than Jake. The viewer admires Jake's tenacity, courage and cool headedness and innate survival instinct. His physical abilities in his new avatar form are impressive. The viewer is learning that Sully is likely to be a force to be reckoned with.
As well as being physically and mentally strong, billige nike free, Jake is admirable for his humanity. The more he learns about the Na'vi's spiritual link to their environment and the more he learns about the humans' destructive intentions on Pandora, the more willing he becomes to stand up for the Na'vi for what he believes is right and morally just, even if it means going against his own kind. In a dramatic scene where the humans destroy a place that is sacred to the Na'vi Jake stops the powerful earth moving machinery by smashing the camera that enables their remote control. A low angle camera shot looking up at them from Sully's perspective shows the immense size and scale of the imposing and destructive machines, which are worrying examples of humankind's 'feats' of technology. Sully leaps aboard, regardless, and smashes the camera. This action is, of course, captured on the camera and witnessed by the humans back at the base. Jake's betrayal here becomes evident. His willingness to forego his obligation to his corrupt employer and, by extension, his species is admirable because to see one's own kind as wrong would be a difficult thing to admit or be willingly associated with.
Jake Sully sacrifices his human self in order to retain his humanity. It is this irony that creates the film's central message of humanity verses inhumanity and exposes the dark side of human nature: the ability to act in a morally corrupt manner. Jake is the light, or hope, nike free billige, amidst moral decay in this futuristic setting. The viewer witnesses the transformation in Jake's physicality and life purpose through a range of techniques, michael kors veske, including camera work, voice over and narrative perspective. His rejection of humankind and his courage to become a traitor, or 'turncoat' is a highly interesting and admirable quality in him as a character.

TECHNIQUES ASSOCIATED WITH CHARACTER   MAIN CHARACTER JAKE SULLY,michael kors klokker. Essay Plan
1. S. Extreme close up of eyes. E. (what) This is a visual MOTIF (a recurring image or symbol of significance). (why) Eyes link the human self to the humanoid avatar. Eyes reveal emotion, feeling and expression. Eyes are a window to the soul.
Eg. First introduced (physically) to Jake with this shot. When he 'wakes' from cryogenic sleep he is bathed in blue light   foreshadows his Na'vi self/look. His first link with the avatar, through the 'eye' of Eywa. Making a spiritual connection with Neytiri, "I see you". Final frame of film is also eyes, but Jake's Na'vi eyes. He has 'woken up'.
2. Voice over. Narrative perspective. Viewer 'hears' his thoughts, nike free, his ideas, his dreams. Gain emotional and personal experience. Understand Jake, how he feels etc. Abstract thought. Insight.
3. Direct address to camera. Eye contact with camera. 'film within the film'. The video log he keeps. Links to the voice over narrative. Purpose is to document the scientific study that he is taking part in. It is the official record of the avatar programme in progress. Reminder to himself of purpose, allegiances, to keep him 'grounded', anchored to reality, to keep him 'real'. This is a record of Jake's physical experience.
Eg. Jake has clearly physically deteriorated over the course of these logs, he appears exhausted, mulberry udsalg, he's malnourished, he is dishevelled and unkempt. Contrast this with examples of how much stronger , more agile and more accepted he has become as Na'vi. Shows that he is transitioning more to his Na'vi form.
