Sharp new Vauxhall Insignia shows its class
The facelifted Insignia will debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, but we've visited Vauxhall's UK HQ to speak exclusively to the team tasked with keeping one of its most important models looking fresh.
Chief exterior designer Niels Loeb told us one of the team's key aims was to "keep the appeal of the Insignia's exterior,
mulberry taske, but sharpen it up to fit with current models such as the Astra GTC."
The exterior tweaks make the car's nose seem wider and lower,
nike free, while the hatch proportions are better in profile, thanks to the new front bumper design and a 20mm longer rear bumper.
The estate's tailgate looks much improved, too,
nike free run, now that the tail lights don't intersect with the bottom of the screen.
There's a redesigned steering wheel and dash top, and the option of a digital screen instead of dials. Also, the outgoing button heavy centre console has been replaced by a sleek touchscreen.
What's more, the Sporty VXR is set to get even more kit. This model will also debut at Frankfurt, and will boast the top spec eight inch touchscreen. It'll also get its own, sportier version of the eight inch TFT dial display, while new sports seats will keep drivers secure when putting the car's revised suspension set up to the test.
Engineering group manager Michael Harder showed us how the controls for audio,
nike air max 90, sat nav and telecommunications function by touch, voice or via the laptop style trackpad between the seats. The latter works particularly well, and a discreet vibration through the pad lets you know when you've selected a function.
Fleet buyers purchase 85 per cent of Insignias, and Vauxhall is keen to play up the car's ability to operate effectively as a mobile office. Two new 99g/km engines bring huge company car tax benefits, while re engineered suspension is claimed to improve the car's handling without ruining the ride.
And with each model costing thousands less than before the entry level car is 1,771 cheaper you'll no doubt be seeing a lot more Insignias pounding up and down Britain's motorways.
So much complete tosh is said about Vauxhall having plummeting residuals have the same people that claim this ever tried to actually BUY a secondhand Vauxhall? If they did they would know that you pay an arm and several legs to buy one secondhand. For that reason I previously bought a last issue Vectra new at a good discount. In my ownership it had not one single fault after 4 years and 97,000 miles so the reliability was excellent and unfortunately it was at that point involved in an accident and written off (fully protecting my wife who thankfully had not one injury). The insurance company valued it and paid out 50% of the next of discount amount I paid 97,000 miles earlier at new. That's way way WAY above your VW's and BMW's in residual value after 4 years and nearly 100,000 miles (both in percentage terms and especially sheer amount lost low purchase price at new for the Vectra). On top of that I always found the Vectra to be more comfortable on long motorways journeys than the Mondeo (which always gave me a sore back and I had to regularly stop), I could go on regular 400 mile motorway journeys in the Vectra without a stop arriving at my destination fresh. I intend to buy an Insignia (German designed by Opel) for both its reliability and its (in fact) high residuals. On top of that its a smart looking car.

In my ownership it never once broke down and it had not one single fault after 4 years and 97,000 miles so the reliability was excellent (usual servicing and replacement of tyres only) and unfortunately it was at that point involved in an accident and written off (fully protecting my wife who thankfully had not one injury). That's complete tosh! Have you ever tried to actually BUY a secondhand Vauxhall? I have you'll pay an arm and several legs. That's why I previously bought a last issue Vectra. Don't go by the List price I paid a well discounted nett price. I had it from new until 4 years and 97,000 miles later it never broke down (not even once) and it never had even one fault (usual servicing and replacing tyres only). At that point it was written off in an accident. Thankfully protecting my wife from any injury who had not even one scratch. The insurance company paid up at 50% of the nett of discount amount I paid at new 4 years and 97,000 miles earlier. That's way, way, WAY above your VW's and BMW's after 4 years and nearly 100,000 miles. Think about it. As a previous company car user for many years I've driven Mondeos and VW Passats. I fully intend to buy its successor the Insignia."Dark days of the Vectra?"
Depends on what one you mean. I once had the very VERY first issue Vectra (circa 1996) as a Company car. It was a 1.7 diesel which thought it was really a 1.0 litre a useless gutless wonder,
mulberry, it took about a week to overtake anything. The last issue Vectra was a whole different kettle of fish entirely much more robust and solid, and much better engines, better ride comfort, handling,
nike free, etc. I currently have a 150bhp deisel Vectra and it is the business comfortable, and with enough power and torgue on tap to overtake anything in an instant. As a previous Company car driver for many years I've driven Mondeos (130bhp deisel), VW Passats (140bhp deisel),
mulberry pung, etc. I fully intend to buy its successor the Insignia (for me it would be the 160).
Nah,
nike free dame, the Vectra attempting to compete against the Mondeo did more damage to GM in Europe than Allegro did to Leyland all those years ago. For GM to move on and up they need to wipe the memory of Vectra although the lineage lives on in the family tree: Victor (gap filled by Viva) Cavalier, Vectra,
nike free, Imsignia. The insignia has stepped up into Omega territory. Ford had Cortina, Sierra, Mondeo with the latest Mondeo stepping up to Granada territory. Both Focus and Astra now are more spacious than Cavaliers and Sierras. Ka and Adam at the bottom. Vectra days were dark and dire for GM, very dark and was absolutely whipped by Ford in the sales numbers.
Canberra that's complete tosh. For a start the "Victor" was never a replacement for the Viva. The "Victor" was a large saloon (of the time) whereas the Viva was a mid size one. The Cavalier was a success, both per press reviews and sales. The first Vectra ("Vectra A") was marketed in the UK as the (last) "Cavalier" both a critical success and sales success. The only one to falter was the "Vectra B" (circa 1996 onwards) per the very first 1.7 diesels which were underpowered quickly superseded and put right (after about 18 months?) with a bigger/better engine (1.9 diesel?). The "Vectra C" (circa 2002 onwards) was a very different kettle of fish especially the 150 diesel (2005 onwards?) which went like st off a shovel (in reality the 150 bhp diesel being a Fiat designed engine used in the Alpha Romeo?).
